History
Hotel Saurat is an excellent example in the Pyrenees area because of its extensive experience in the tourism sector since the 19th century. One of the key aspects of the hotel is to offer our guests a welcoming and familiar treatment, and this is something we show in the services we offer. Our main goal is to make our guests feel they’re at home.
Hotel Saurat is one of the oldest hotel companies in the Catalan Pyrenees. The very beginning of the hotel date back to the 19th century and located in a different part of the village. Its founding name was Fonda Saurat. Way back then, Fonda Saurat had only three rooms for their guests. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new hotel was built next to the old Fonda with fourteen rooms.
During 1932-34, the hotel bought land in a more suitable place to build new facilities for the hotel outside the village. This is where the existing hotel was built. During the Spanish Civil War, one of the most important labour unions in Spain (UGT) confiscated the hotel to be used as a resting place for their union members. When the war ended, the family could take control of their business back.
In the 1960s, the hotel facilities were extended, the hotel was renovated, and the number of rooms was increased. These renovations allowed us to grant new services and modern image that was widely praised.
In 2003, the fourth generation of the family decided to start a new project refurbishing completely the hotel, but respecting the hotel original architecture. The goal was to adapt the hotel to this new times. As a result Hotel Saurat attained the category of three star hotel.
We would like to share a curious fact. During 1954, fourth generations of the family lived together at the hotel:
- C0NCEPCIÓ CANAL (Saurat’s widow), wife of the founder of the hotel
- Antonio Saurat’s wife ROSARIO BARRERA PINELL (Saurat’s widow)
- Mrs. CONCEPCIÓ SAURAT BARRERA, Rosario’s daughter and Silvio Montaña’s wife
- ANTONIO MONTAÑA SAURAT, Concepció and Silvio’s son, and current owner.
Today the hotel is managed by the fifth generation of the family, being one of the oldest and most successful establishments in the Catalan Pyrenees.
